Women have many options available to them these days when it comes to getting hairless legs with epilators, waxing and laser hair removal being popular choices.
But shaving remains the most popular choice for getting smooth legs as it is cheap and can be very effective if done correctly.
So, here’s our top tips for shaving your legs to help you brush up your shaving skills and get your legs looking their best!
Shave in a Warm Shower or Bath
You should always shave your legs in a warm shower or bath and make sure your skin is wet. Never shave with dry skin as the razor blade will get clogged and you’ll end up with cuts, nicks and razor burn.
Also, it’s a good idea to wait a while until the end of bathing if possible before you start to shave. This will allow your skin to relax and the hair to soften – resulting in a much cleaner shave.
Use a Good Razor
By “good” we mean “new” or “clean”. You’re far more likely to cut yourself if your razor is old and dull so keep your razor blade clean and replace it often. If you’re not sure which one to use then take a look at the Gillette Venus Embrace – it’s a popular choice at a resonable price.
Exfoliate
It is important that you exfoliate before shaving as this will remove any dead skin making it easier to shave.
Apply a Small Amount of Shaving Cream
There are loads of shaving creams, shaving gels and shaving oils to choose from. Try them all until you find one that works best for you. If you have sensitive skin, then avoid unnecessary additives such as fragrance or alcohol and choose a product that contains skin-soothers such as coconut, aloe or vitamin E. A glycerin-based shaving lubricant may help if you have very dry skin.
Most people use far too much cream or gel. Start by applying a small amount and massaging it really well into the hair to soften and lift them ready for shaving.
Use the Correct Technique
Gently stretch the skin in front of the blade with your free hand and aim to shave the hair in a single pass. If you must make a second pass over the skin, then do it gently, and don’t push down too hard. It’s really not worth trying to get a super-close shave by pulling your skin too taut when shaving as this can cause ingrowing hairs.
Get In Position
Sit on the ledge of your shower, if you have one. If you have no place to sit, then raise up your leg against the wall of the shower. Make sure you carefully balance yourself.
When you start to shave your legs, place the razor at the base of your ankle and gently pull it up over your whole leg. If you get bad razor burn, then try to shave in the same direction as your hair is growing if possible.
To shave your foot and ankles, raise your leg and shave over your toes as well as the bridge of your foot. The skin in these areas is thin and can be easily nicked, so be especially careful.
Don’t forget to shave your thighs, using the razor for the upper part of your leg with a single stroke starting from just above your knee. Keep shaving until you have reached your thigh and continue all the way around until your thigh is smooth to the touch.
As you shave, keep running your fingers over the skin to help spot any areas that you may have missed with the razor.
Rinse Your Blade
Between every stroke rinse your blade to stop it clogging and to keep it wet for a smooth, clean shave.
Rinse with Water
When you have finally finished shaving, rinse your legs off with warm water to remove any remaining lubricant and then splash your legs with cold water to close the pores.
After Shaving
Finally, apply a good quality skin lotion or moisturizer and you’re done!
