In this post I discuss kneeling pads for use in the garden and for other outdoor chores. It’s very rare that I pull weeds or put in plants and don’t have my kneeling handy. It’s just too hard to squat down and weed like I used to so I finally broke down and bought a kneeling pad. Now I’m able to comfortably work in the garden without killing my knees and hips. And when I finish I’m far less tired than I used to be.
Why use a kneeling pad in the garden?
Why do you want to use a kneeling pad in the garden? I can answer that in a single word – COMFORT. It just makes all of your gardening chores so much easier. No more dirt, gravel and beauty bark digging into your knees while you put in plants or weed the flower bed. If you live in an area where it rains (like I do), it a garden kneeling pad keeps you dry. Plus, you aren’t wearing holes in your jeans.
Unlike knee pads for gardening, you just grab your garden kneeling pad and start working. Garden kneeling pads are light, portable and functional. And they are inexpensive as well.
Features to look for in your garden kneeling pad
Kneeling pads for use in the garden come in many different shapes, sizes and materials. Here are features you should look for:
- Kneeling pad thickness – ensure that it is comfortable to use
- Kneeling pad material – durability, water resistance, easy to clean
- Kneeling pad design – size, handle position
Make sure the kneeling pad you get is wide enough. For example, think about how you weed your garden. You stay in one spot, dig up the weeds that are within reach and slide to the right or left to continue. If you get a narrow (or overall smaller) kneeling pad you’ll be continually adjusting the pad. If you don’t you’ll end up with have of your knee on the pad on half off. That’s why I DON’T like the handle location on my kneeling pad because it actually forces me to sometimes place my kneecap right on the handle opening.
Lastly, first person product reviews are your friend. Make sure and read product reviews so you learn about the pros and cons of each kneeling pad.

Here are my picks for the top five kneeling pads for use in the garden:

This kneeling pad is 1 inch thick for extra comfort and offers additional protection from stones, wet grass, and sticks. It measures 19″ x 10″ and has the built in handle in the front of the kneeling pad to give more room for knee placement. Water resistant which allows for easy cleaning. Light and portable with a built in handle.
What I like about this kneeling pad: Rather than being square, it’s rectangular, wide, and places the handle in the front of the pad. This gives you more room for your knees.

The InSassy Garden Kneeler Wave Pad is made from non-recycled, non-toxic, high density foam to protect your knees from rough, sharp objects. This kneeling pad is 18″L x 8 1/4″ W x 4/5″ H. It’s also available in an extra large size as well: 22″L x 11″W x 4/5″H. Built in handle.
What I like about this garden kneeler: It’s a full 22″ wide. I’d prefer to see the handle in the front rather than on one end of this garden kneeling pad, but I always think a wider kneeling pad offers the most comfort.

This garden kneeling pad features extra thick 1 1/2 inch high density foam. A full 1/2″ thicker than most kneeling pads. Measures 18″ x 11″ in size and features a built in handle positioned so no extra kneeling space is taken up. Durable and heavy duty and designed with two-sided textured surfaces.
What I like about this garden kneeling pad: It has to be the thickness. If you have pain issues with your knees, you’ll appreciate the extra cushioning

This kneeling pad for the garden features a thick core of dense EVA foam. This is meant to prevent items under the pad from creating uncomfortable pressure points while at the same conforming to the shape of your knees. Waterproof and easy to clean. Built in carry handle. 22″L x 14″W x 2.1″H
What I like about this kneeling pad: Memory foam is great for removing pressure points which should make your gardening experience more comfortable.

The Kneez Garden Kneeling Pad uses an extra thick high density memory foam cushion. The 2″ inner-pressure relieving high density memory foam padding plus shock absorbing EVA core will protect and conform to the shape of your knees to protect you from rough, uneven ground. This kneeling pad is made of easy to clean heavy duty nylon fabric. This pad is easy to clean. Just rub gently with damp cloth using soap and water. This garden kneeling pad works on any surface – place on stones, sticks or wet grass. Size: 20″ x 11″ x 2″. Built in handle.
What I like about this kneeling pad: 2″ of memory foam to support and conform your knees.
Caring for your kneeling pad
Caring for your garden kneeling pad is pretty straight forward. During the gardening season make sure you store it in the shade. Leaving it exposed to hot direct sunlight will impact the life of any kneeling pad. So it’s best to put it in a cool, dry place when you aren’t using it. You are going to get your kneeling pad dirty. Make sure to rinse it off occasionally.
Take a look at your gardening kneeling pad and ensure there are no foreign objects (sharp rocks, bark, etc.) embedded in the pad that could work there way up to the surface. When gardening season is over make sure and put it in the garage so it’s not exposed to inclement winter weather.
Conclusion – kneeling pads for use in the garden
My hope is this post gave you some good information you can use to pick a kneeling pad for use in the garden. Even a very basic, cheap kneeling pad (see my kneeling pad in the photo at the top of the post) makes working in the garden a far more comfortable prospect.
If you add a garden kneeling pad to your collection of garden tools I think you’ll find your hours caring for your plants far more enjoyable and something you’ll use season after season.
