Braun’s Series 5 made some big leaps in technology coming from the Series 3 lineup. The 590cc is the first in the series to use active lift technology and opti foil vs. senso foil.
The Braun Series 5 590cc has a classic design with innovative features. It can function as a wet or dry shaver, is fully washable, and comes with Braun’s Clean & Renew System.
While the Series 5 is not the newest in the line of Braun shavers, many guys still prefer Series 3 and Series 5 shavers over the newest Series 7 shavers. A lot of this comes down to personal preference, nostalgia, and the fact that Braun has and will continue to make a quality shaver.
Let’s take a look at some of the features that make the 590cc such a desirable model among Braun shavers in the Series 5 lineup.
Braun Series 5 590cc Features
One of the most notable features of the 590cc is its ability to shave those difficult areas such as the jaw line and beneath the chin. The “contour adaptive” shaving head combined with opti foil technology allows the head to glide and adapt to the curves on you face while the opti foil cuts close but is easy on the skin.
For those flat lying hairs, the active lift middle trimmer makes it easy to get a quality shave; no more missed areas due to stubborn hair.
The 590cc comes with a precision trimmer which is perfect for grooming and trimming sideburns, a moustache, or beard.
If you’re an international traveler, the 590cc comes equipped with a smart plug worldwide voltage feature. There is also a travel pouch and brush to keep your shaver protected and clean.
A four stage LED display gives you charging status, battery status as well as hygiene status. The battery is a Li-Ion battery which is great as they don’t suffer from “memory effect” even after repeated charging.
Now let’s take a look at some of the features offered with the Clean & Renew system.
Braun Clean & Renew
If you’re not familiar with the Clean & Renew system, it is a standalone charging station that also cleans and lubricates automatically. All you have to do is set your shaver in the charging stand when you’re done shaving.
The Clean & Renew System uses cartridges made of an alcohol solution which kills 99.99% of germs. Cleaning a shaver by simply running it under water is not very hygienic and can lead to skin irritation or possibly infection so a cleaning station is a nice feature to have.
On the 590cc model there is an automatic program selection meaning the station chooses how to clean your shaver based on how long it’s been since the last cleaning. Unlike newer models, it does not have a fast clean feature and does not dry the shaver after cleaning. If you’re looking for the latest among Braun shavers, as of this writing I recommend you check out the award winning Braun Series 7 790cc.
What other Guy’s are saying about the Braun Series 5 590cc
The 590cc received an average of 3.9 out of a possible 5 star rating based on nearly 200 customer reviews. Some of the comments made were:
“It’s quiet, and gives me smooth close dry shaves,” as well as, “Had this about a year and my husband absolutely loves it, no problems at all.”
Some of the common complaints about the Braun Series 5 590cc were the cost of refill cartridges for the clean & Renew System. Some guys have gone as far as simply making their own solution and pouring it into a cartridge. I wouldn’t recommend any modifications as this could void the 2 year warranty.
The cartridges cost about $5 a piece but last for 30 days, and that is using it daily. I don’t think that is too expensive considering all the features and the security knowing your shaver is hygienically safe to use.
